Indiana Professional Engineers

Continuing Education (PDH) Requirements

Effective with the current renewal cycle, Indiana requires continuing education for its Professional Engineers. Before renewal on July 31, 2012, engineers must earn 30 hours of continuing education (also known as PDH or professional development hours).

Indiana engineers are invited to join the tens of thousands of engineers around the country who use PDHengineer as a trusted source of Board-accepted continuing education. Since 2003, PDHengineer.com has been an approved sponsor of continuing education. In fact, our courses are accepted by every state with a continuing education requirement. Our long history of providing quality PDH products makes us the smart choice for Indiana's PE's.

The Indiana Board does not approve continuing education providers, but instead approves specific courses. PDHengineer has submitted and gained the Board's approval for several online courses. As of late 2011, the Board appears to have suspended course reviews. However, the Board clarified in its November 2011 meeting that courses approved by another state board need not be submitted to the Indiana Board for approval, as long as the course relates to the practice of engineering.

The Board states specifically that a course must be designed to directly enhance a professional engineer's knowledge and skill in providing services relevant to the practice of engineering. The Board has not yet clarified whether it will accept Project Management and Business Skills Courses. To help you choose courses you can be sure will be accepted by the Board, we have placed a box on the right side of every course overview page listing states in which the course is accepted. Courses accepted in Indiana will include courses covering Indiana Laws and Rules, engineering ethics, and engineering technical content.

PDHengineer has an Iron-Clad Money-Back GuaranteeOver the years, thousands of engineers from around the country have relied on PDHengineer.com for affordable high quality continuing education that meets the requirements of their state licensing boards. In fact, we've never had one of our courses rejected by ANY state engineering board. We're confident enough to offer an iron-clad money back guarantee. If any PDHengineer.com online course or webinar is rejected by your state engineering board for any reason, you get your money back. Period.

PDHengineer's courses meet all of the state standards as shown in the new law:

  • The course should have a statement of objectives which the program should achieve for its participants relating to and enhancing the practice of engineering
  • The sponsor must provide:
  • Adequate administration including a reliable person to coordinate and administer the program; and
  • For the maintenance of records
  • The course should be thoughtfully planned and designed to explore in considerable depth one subject or a closely related group of subjects
  • The course shall:
  • Have qualified instructors with demonstrated competence in the subject area
  • Be held in adequate facilities to allow for an effective program
  • employ a variety of educational methods and teaching aids that enhance the learning process
  • Appropriate methods of evaluation shall be devised and used to measure the course effectiveness
  • Sponsor must provide a meaningful record of attendance such as a certificate of completion

Indiana permits all of the 30 biennially-required hours to be earned as online self-study courses such as those on PDHengineer.com. In our online course catalog, you will find courses that meet the board's requirement covering all major areas of engineering practice. We offer a wide variety of subjects including today's hottest engineering topics.

Required topics of study

As a part of the continuing education requirement each biennial renewal period, Indiana PE's must include:

PDHengineer's course Laws, Rules and Ethics for Indiana Engineers is designed specifically to help engineers meet this requirement. This 2-PDH course, pre-approved by the Indiana Board, will cover both the 1-hour ethics requirement and the 1-hour Laws and Rules requirement. Learn more about this course now.
