New Jersey has enacted a law that requires professional engineers to complete
continuing education courses prior to license renewal. This new law is effective
for the renewal period ending April 30, 2012. Engineers must earn 24 PDH during each biennial renewal
term. At least 2 PDH must be in the area of "professional practice ethics." Since this rule was enacted in the middle of a renewal period, the Board will require
only 15 PDH (2 of which must be in the area of professional practice ethics) for license renewal on April 30, 2012.
Subsequent renewal periods will require that engineers earn the full 24 PDH.
The new law gives the Board authority to pre-approve courses; however in correspondence from the Board Office on October 24, 2011, PDHengineer was notified that the Board has suspended its course preapproval procedure and that courses meeting the New Jersey statute will be accepted without Board pre-approval.
It is important to note that the board will only accept courses that "materially relate to the practice of professional engineering with the clear purpose to maintain, improve or expand the skills and knowledge relevant to the practice of engineering." We have been informed that the board will not accept courses on the subjects of practice building skills, practice management skills, or practice marketing. All courses must be of a technical nature.
PDHengineer courses except those listed in the Business Skills category meet the New Jersey Board requirements. To verify that a course is acceptable, please check list of approved states in the right column on any of PDHengineer's course overview pages.
Engineers who do not complete the continuing education requirement are subject to a civil penalty of up to $500 and the requirement to completed additional PDH courses for the first offense. Second and subsequent offenses shall be considered professional misconduct pursuant to the provisions of P.L. 1938, c.342 (C:45:8-27 et seq.) and P.L. 1978, c.73 (C:45:1-14 et seq.).
