Overview

Harnessing the power of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides an important set of tools for an engineer. This course will provide a solid understanding of the components of a GIS. From there you will begin to see the enormous potential in what it can do for projects in many different disciplines. Because many local, state and federal governmental agencies manage their resources and inventories using GIS, much useful public data is available to assist with engineering projects. We will take a look at some of that data and the enormous potential of spatial analysis. Because people respond so favorably to maps, we will consider the basics of mapping the results of analyses.

GIS and engineering interface in practical ways answering important questions for civil, environmental, transportation, facilities and other projects. GIS data sets contain line work for geo-referenced features such as parcel data, roads, soil surveys, and Digital Elevation Models (DEM’s) as well as a database containing valuable attribute information about those features. Because these GIS data sets are geo-referenced, information about multiple features can be analyzed in a common environment. From watershed modeling to facilities management, there are myriad applications for spatial analysis.

Additionally, GIS analyses can provide maps for public review, meet regulatory requirements and provide compelling numbers for funding requests. This course will be taught interactively ensuring that you gain an understanding of how GIS works and will draw on  the instructor’s extensive professional GIS experience in the public and private sectors.
