Overview

This presentation begins with a look at The World Trade Center disaster from an engineering standpoint.  Certainly everyone was heard the accounts of this disaster from the news organizations, but it is important for engineers to look at this tragedy from a different point of view.

We will start with concepts in the design of the World Trade Center including wind tunnel experiments and the anticipation of an airplane collision.  Additionally, this discussion will cover construction details and go through possible destruction planning and reasons for the total collapse.  The webinar will also touch on what engineers can do to protect the public from similar situations.

The webinar will be interactive with participant discussion.  The webinar is intended for engineers of every specialty as the concepts discussed are cross-disciplinary and far-reaching.

A study of wind engineering will complete the three-hour webinar.  Beginning with the extensive wind testing and engineering concepts applied to The World Trade Center, the discussion will show the history of wind engineering beginning with the earliest wind force experiments to present-day wind tunnels.  Effects on building codes, design practices, and building performance will also be explored along with possible future technologies in wind engineering.

Learning Objectives

Those attending this three-hour live web based seminar will learn:

  • Concepts in the design of the World Trade Center

  • How wind tunnel experiments were made

  • Engineering enhancements made in anticipation of an airplane collision

  • From the engineer's point of view, reasons the building totally collapsed

  • Possible destructing planning

  • Construction details

  • How the earliest wind force experiments were conducted

  • How aeronautical wind tunnels work

  • How boundary layer wind tunnels are used to develop building codes

  • Evolving building design practices

  • Evolving building performance

  • Possible future technologies
