Overview
This is an introductory lesson in fire protection engineering for all of the members of the building design team. The architectural, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical features of buildings and their related infrastructure are all affected by the principles of fire protection engineering. Engineers need to know how fire safety requirements affect the design work they do in their individual technical disciplines. This course will tell you about the principle requirements of fire safety in building design, show you some illustrative examples, and direct you to specific codes and other technical resources you will need to efficiently and effectively incorporate fire protection considerations in your building designs. This is a course that will broaden your skills, add value to your career, and allow you to design safe and cost-effective buildings and related infrastructure for your company, agency, clients and the public.
This seminar will introduce you to fire protection engineering fundamentals related to building materials and design, water supply for fire protection, fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems, special occupancies and hazards, and storage of flammable and hazardous materials. You will be introduced to:
- Fire protection basics related to building materials and design, including fire areas, height limitations, interior fire spread, egress, finishes, insulation, roof coverings, air handling, plastic pipe and conduit, and fire retardant wood products
- The basics of water supply for fire protection including sprinklered facilities demand, demand for unsprinklered facilities, pressure requirements, quantities, on-site storage, fire pumps, and distribution systems
- The basic types of fire extinguishing systems including automatic sprinklers, foam (AFFF), standpipes, dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, Halon 1301 and portable extinguishers
- The basic types of fire detection, alarm and reporting systems
- Some fire protection fundamentals for buildings with special occupancies such as medical facilities, detention facilities, electronic and telecommunication facilities; and special hazards such as petroleum fuel storage, waterfront facilities, and aircraft maintenance facilities
- The occupancy hazard classification system (light, ordinary group 1, ordinary group 2, special)

Accessing the Webinar
After paying for your webinar reservation, you will be given the opportunity to print a Webinar Receipt and Access Information page that contains instructions to access the webinar. This information can also be found by clicking the My Account tab at the top of any PDHengineer page, then select Print Receipts and Access Information for Webinars Purchased. About 10 minutes before the scheduled starting time, call the toll-free phone number listed in the instructions. When asked to do so, enter the access code shown on the instructions.
Then, using your computer, go to the website shown in the instructions and enter the access code as shown. You will be asked to enter your name and email address.

Printing Your Certificate
After completion of the webinar, return to the PDHengineer.com main website and click the My Account tab in the top right corner of the screen. Select Webinars Attended Pending Survey Completion to take a short three or four question survey regarding how well we met our stated learning objectives. You will then be able to immediately print your Certificate of Completion. You can always print additional copies of this certificate by selecting My Account and then Webinars Attended.
Cancellation Policy
You may cancel your enrollment in this webinar up to 48 hours prior to the event and receive a full refund less a $10 registration service fee. Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the webinar, but at least 4 hours prior to the scheduled starting time will not be refunded, but can be credited to a future webinar. Cancellations made less than 4 hours before the webinar are not refundable.
