Overview
This is an introductory webinar in fire protection engineering for all the members of a building design team. The architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical features of buildings and their related infrastructure are all affected by the principles of fire protection engineering. Therefore, engineers need to know how fire safety requirements affect the design work they do in their individual technical disciplines.
This webinar will explain the principle requirements of fire safety in building design, provide some illustrative examples, and identify specific codes and other technical resources you will need to incorporate fire protection considerations efficiently and effectively into your building designs. More specifically, it will introduce you to fire protection engineering fundamentals related to building materials and design, water supply for fire protection, fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems, special occupancies and hazards, and storage of flammable and hazardous materials.
This is an interactive, web-based seminar that will broaden your skills, add value to your career, and allow you to design safe and cost-effective buildings and related infrastructure for your company, agency, clients, and the public.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The principles of fire protection engineering that affect building materials and design, including fire areas, height limitations, interior fire spread, egress, finishes, insulation, roof coverings, air handling, plastic pipe and conduit, and fire retardant wood products
- How to provide an adequate water supply for fire protection, including sprinkler and non-sprinkler facilities demand, pressure requirements, quantities, on-site storage, fire pumps, and distribution systems
- The basic types of fire extinguishing systems, including automatic sprinklers, foam (AFFF), standpipes, dry chemicals, carbon dioxide, Halon 1301, and portable extinguishers
- The different systems for fire detection, alarm, reporting, and evacuation
- Requirements for buildings with special occupancies, such as medical, detention, electronic, and telecommunication facilities
- Requirements for special hazards, such as petroleum fuel storage, waterfront facilities, and aircraft maintenance facilities
- The occupancy hazard classification system (light, ordinary group 1, ordinary group 2, special)
- Performance-based fire safety design, codes, and other professional resources

System Requirements
To attend this webinar, you'll need a computer with a high-speed internet connection (DSL or cable) and a phone line. For your comfort, it is recommended that you use a speakerphone or headset to connect to the webinar. Our system will support both PC's and Apple computers using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari browsers. If you select a site license, you must provide projection of the internet onto a viewing screen or have a monitor large enough for the group to see.

Accessing the Webinar
After purchasing the webinar, a printable Webinar Receipt/Access Information page will appear on your screen. Or you can review and print the page anytime by clicking the My Account tab at the top of any PDHengineer page, then selecting Print Receipts and Access Information for Webinars Purchased.
About 10 minutes before the scheduled starting time, call the toll-free phone number listed in the instructions and enter the access code. Next, go to the website shown in the instructions and enter your name, email and access code.

Printing Your Certificate
After completion of the webinar, return to the PDHengineer.com main website and click the My Account tab in the top right corner of the screen. Select Webinars Attended Pending Survey Completion to take a short three to four question survey. The survey is intended to measure how well the webinar met the stated learning objectives. You will then be able to immediately print your Certificate of Completion. You can always print additional copies of your certificate by selecting My Account and then Webinars Attended.
Cancellation Policy
You may cancel your enrollment in this webinar up to 48 hours prior to the event and receive a full refund less a $10 registration service fee. Cancellations made less than 48 hours prior to the webinar, but at least 4 hours prior to the scheduled starting time will not be refunded, but can be credited to a future webinar. Cancellations made less than 4 hours before the webinar are not refundable.
