To design a cost-effective foundation for a structure to interact favorably with the soil on which it rests, a site- and project-specific subsurface model must be developed. Subsurface exploration is the first step in building a subsurface model.

This course, as a part of the soil mechanics series, covers basics of planning and execution of subsurface exploration.

This course is applicable to geotechnical, civil, mining, structural, and environmental engineers, as well as design and construction personnel involved with the planning, design, and construction of building structures that utilize soils.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Principles and State-of-Practice of subsurface exploration
  • How to plan and execute a site and project-specific subsurface exploration program
  • How to perform a field reconnaissance to assess subsurface conditions prior to establishing a subsurface exploration
  • The benefits of using geologic mapping and geophysical explorations prior to invasive explorations
  • Soil boring methods and equipment
  • Sampling methods and uses for disturbed and undisturbed soil samples
  • Guidelines for minimum number of exploration points and depth of exploration
  • In-situ testing methods that are currently used to establish site-specific soil and rock properties for design and construction

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 35 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
