This four-hour course is a detailed account of the August 14, 2003 electric system blackout that affected over 50 million people in the Eastern United States - one of the largest blackouts in American history. This course is part one of a two part series about the blackout. Part one covers the conditions leading up to the point where the system started cascading into a blackout. To help understand the confusion that occurred on August 14th, the course includes actual transcripts of conversations between control centers and generating facilities.
