In Gas Pipeline Hydraulics , you'll learn ...

• How the flow rate in a gas pipeline is affected by the pipe size, pipe length and gas properties.
• How the pressure drop is calculated based upon generally accepted formulas such as Colebrook-White, AGA, IGT etc.
• Calculate the HP requirement at each compressor station depending upon the flow rate and pipe lengths
• How to calculate the line pack volume for the entire pipeline based upon the pressure and temperature variation along the pipeline.

Overview

This webinar explains the basic theory and application of centrifugal compressors installed on gas and other compressible fluid pipelines. You will learn how to perform pressure loss calculations for pipe, fittings and valves and how to select a compressor station for a specific application.

The webinar will include case studies of typical gas pipeline systems for transporting natural gas and other compressible fluids in a long distance pipeline based upon pipe diameter, wall thickness and the gas properties using various correlations for pressure drop due to friction loss such as Colebrook-White, AGA etc.

Additionally, you will learn different methods of determining the gas compressibility factor (Standing-Katz, AGA etc.) You will learn how to select the pipe size for a given flow rate and gas composition and compare pipeline expansion scenarios considering adding new compressor stations versus looping the pipeline.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

• Gas properties: Density, gravity, viscosity and compressibility factor. Variation with temperature.
• Understand the various pressure drop formulas such as Colebrook-White, Darcy-Weisbach, AGA, Panhandle A and B and Weymouth equations for steady state flow in gas pipelines. Friction factor, Reynold's number and Transmission factor.
• Heat transfer between gas and surrounding medium. Joule-Thompson effect.
• Size pipelines for specified throughput and pressures. Calculate MAOP and Hydrotest Pressures.
• Calculate the locations and required horsepower of compressor stations on long distance pipelines.
• Pressure and temperature profile of natural gas pipelines
• Thermal Conductivity versus Overall heat transfer coefficient
• Determine the line pack volume in gas pipelines.
