Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above). However, if you are not licensed in Ohio, it is suggested that you purchase the self-paced version of the course.

In Theory and Application of Reciprocating Compressors , you'll learn ...

  • To understand basic differences in design and construction of various reciprocating compressors
  • Provides understanding of standard terms for machine components and operating parameters
  • To understand capabilities and predict limitations of various machine designs
  • To relate operating conditions to potential damaging effects on machinery

This 3-hour online course describes the applications, characteristics, and operation of positive displacement (reciprocating) compressors. This course is oriented toward engineers involved in specification, selection, application and operation of gas compressors. The presentation concentrates on large industrial compressors as in natural gas transmission and process plants, but is applicable to all reciprocating compressor units.

The course begins with an introduction to various positive displacement machines, then concentrates on reciprocating compressors. These are developed to provide knowledge of machine layout, mechanical components, machine limits and methods for control of driver load and/or compressor throughput.

The compression process is explained and equations are developed to describe the process and effect of changing pressures and other machine parameters. These give insight to possible control methods for unit throughput and engine load, and can assist in either developing unit control systems or in evaluating logic of an existing system.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • To understand basic differences in design and construction of various reciprocating compressors
  • Provides understanding of standard terms for machine components and operating parameters
  • To understand capabilities and predict limitations of various machine designs
  • To relate operating conditions to potential damaging effects on machinery
  • To understand capabilities and limitations of control equipment
  • To understand the practical reasons for and the theory behind multiple staging
  • To understand calculations for unit load and throughput

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
