This 1-hour online course addresses the growing interest and utilization of supercritical steam power plants in the United States. First, the basic steam cycles are reviewed in detail, including the Rankine superheat cycle, the reheat cycle, and the regenerative cycle. Then, the characteristics of supercritical steam are discussed, along with its incorporation into the Rankine cycles. Statistics are quoted that show how supercritical technology is becoming mainstream after its brief trial during the late 1950s and early 1960s. The pros and cons of the supercritical steam cycle are also addressed. It is assumed that the user of this course is somewhat familiar with the basic thermodynamics of steam power cycles.
