Biomass is one of the most available and yet consistently under-utilized forms of renewable energy on the planet. This Biomass course will help the student identify potential biomass projects, understand the special considerations biomass projects require, become familiar with the various energy conversion techniques, recognize the unique problems associated with biomass projects, and analyze a specific biomass energy conversion project under consideration.

This course contains a broad overview of the biomass world and attempts to identify general classes of equipment that work well within the various individual segments of the industry. The course is well-illustrated with regard to the processes and general equipment types used in biomass energy conversion, and provides a process-oriented examination of the biomass flow paths for the larger segments of the market. The economic analysis section covers the major project considerations that affect pro forma financial calculations. Major biomass project technical and financial concerns are identified, and basic project economic metrics are presented.

This course is designed to provide initial exposure to the subject for engineering and technology professionals unfamiliar with the material or to act as a review for professionals modestly acquainted with the subject that desire a refresher.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Types of biomass
  • How biomass produced
  • Biomass feedstock quality issues, including moisture content
