The strategy of developing clean and renewable energy on formerly contaminated lands is a recent and growing movement. While there are a number of well-established benefits to siting solar energy facilities on closed landfills, there are also many challenges to such projects. This course outlines the technical and regulatory challenges to placing solar systems on closed landfills, with a particular focus on system placement at Superfund and brownfield sites, and provides case evidence of successful solar system planning and construction.

The course begins with an introduction to ground mounted solar systems followed by a discussion of the different solar technologies available, weight characteristics, and wind and snow loading as they apply to landfill installations. It then provides background information and general guidance on some of the most common engineering obstacles of landfill reuse as they apply to solar system installations. Next, it explains the complications of navigating required permitting, land use ordinances, and liability as applied to solar energy projects on closed landfills.

The target audience for this course is engineers who are interested in solar power as a source of renewable energy, as well as project managers, owners, developers, operators, regulators, and various levels of stakeholders with an interest in revitalizing contaminated lands.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Types of ground-mounted solar technologies
  • Support foundation types
  • Solar power system weight considerations
  • Wind and snow loads
  • Technical complications of solar system installations, including settlement and side slope stability
  • Renewable energy production on Superfund or brownfield sites
  • Required permitting, zoning and land use
  • Requirements for Environmental Site Investigations (ESI)
  • Potential liability concerns under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
