Length: 43 pages

This course will discuss different types of traffic controllers, phasing, phasing sequences, signal timings, and maintenance. The phasing operations and phasing sequences work in conjunction with phase timings, to determine the length of each cycle of the traffic signal operation. Vehicle Phasing includes the Green interval, plus the Yellow Change interval, plus the Red Clearance Interval. Pedestrian indications are included within each Phase module. A Cycle Length includes a number of phases before it recycles. The Phase Sequence is the order in which each phase occurs. Signal timings determine the length of time that each phase indication is displayed.

Students of this course will be able to understand the design and operations of a traffic signal, different types of traffic controllers, phase sequence options, phase timings, and signal display options used to obtain the desired operation of an intersection.

At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to determine:

  • Phasing operations utilizing different interval operations
  • Phase sequencing operations
  • Phase timings
  • Phasing configurations and operation
  • Centralized computer control
  • Maintenance of the entire signalized intersection

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Assigning lane approaches for each phase operation
  • Determining Phasing configurations and operations
