4 Easy Steps to Complete a PDHengineer webinar

This webinar provides insight into the design, installation, operation, and maintenance issues related to both underground and above ground petroleum storage tanks. It is led by an engineer who oversees Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ inventory of several hundred underground and above ground petroleum storage tanks and who regularly interfaces with the local, state, and federal authorities that regulate petroleum tanks in Suffolk County. Suffolk County, located on Long Island, NY, is one of the few counties in the country that draws its drinking water from an aquifer. Consequently, it has very strict underground storage tank regulations.

We begin the webinar with some basic definitions and a review of the pertinent local, state, and federal regulations/codes, as well as the various design standards for underground storage tanks. Using Suffolk County sites as examples, we will discuss the merits of various leak detection systems, access manholes, and piping arrangements. You will also learn how to effectively inspect tanks, sumps, and leak detection systems while maintaining up-to-date records on leaks and spills.

This webinar is designed for a range of students, including engineers, architects, construction monitors, building owners, and code enforcement officials who could be involved in managing the design, installation, or operation of petroleum storage tanks.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to petroleum storage tank design, inspection, and maintenance
  • How to plan for tank management
  • Various design standards used in the industry (e.g., UL, NFPW)
  • The equipment and components used in tanks, associated piping, and leak detection systems
  • How to inspect tank systems (leak/release detection, inventory monitoring, automatic tank gauging)
  • How to maintain tank systems (logging and reporting releases, leaks, and spills)
  • Various methods used to remediate petroleum spills and clean up contaminated soil
  • The impact of weather conditions on remediation efforts
