This 4-hour course provides an overview of the lighting market in the United States and how LED lighting can help reduce energy consumption now and in the future.

The course reviews the fundamentals of lighting, how LEDs work, and the advantages and disadvantages of different types of LED lighting. Finally, the course discusses LED lighting standards, as well as the most appropriate uses for LED lights in residential, commercial, industrial, and outdoor lighting applications.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Lighting energy consumption relative to other energy users
  • The different lighting controls in use today
  • The physics of LED lighting and theories of light propagation
  • Where LED lighting currently fits in the residential, commercial, industrial and outdoor lighting markets
  • How reflection and transmission of light impact the design of lighting materials and the predicted lighting levels in a space
  • Operating principles, advantages and challenges associated with LED lighting
  • Why LEDs are so efficient for colored light applications such as traffic lights and exit signs
  • Methods for achieving white light with LEDs
  • The relative merits of LEDs vs. organic LEDs
  • LED lighting standards, types, and applications
