Almost every manufacturer and body shop that paints their products has at least one spray booth in their facility, but not much is known about a booth’s capabilities. This course follows a manufacturer’s in-house engineer who is asked to take charge of the new booth design and procurement after a fire destroys the old spray both in the plant. He brings in an engineering consultant and an engineer from a spray booth supplier to help him in this rush project. Together they review the legal issues, options to improve the painting operation, the standards and codes that apply, the different types of booths commonly purchased and the many features and options that designers should be aware of. The course will explain the interaction of the different engineers and provide information to help designers provide a spray booth of value to a customer.

The first part of the course deals with the approval process, the applicable codes and standards and the P.E.’s role. The second part discusses the specific features and options that apply to a booth. Each section discusses code requirements and conflicts between the codes, standard practices, design requirements and calculations to perform and option choices to be made. Specific sections include; Airflow, Construction, Lighting, Controls, Structural Support, Ductwork, Special Requirements and Paint Mix Rooms. The basic booth types are discussed in the Airflow section. Items like outdoor booths, prep workstations, booth locations inside of buildings etc. are covered in the Special Requirements section.
