In Problem-Solving Using the Shainin Method, you'll learn ...

  • What is the Shainin System of Problem solving
  • Why the Shanin System has been found to be faster, more accurate, more flexible, more efficient, less complicated, and easier to implement than other systems
  • The functions of the Shainin System, along with a set of methods that support it
  • Why the Shainin System is more likely to find the root cause of a problem compared to cause-to-effect problem solving methods

Many practitioners tend to approach problem-solving by first listing any issues that could cause an undesired effect and then determining which one of those is responsible for the unwanted outcome. While this methodology often produces results, it is also dependant on the actual root cause being included in the initial list of candidates. This approach is effort-intensive, subjective, and is not guaranteed to identify the actual root cause of the problem. A better approach is to start from the unwanted outcome and apply a reverse-engineering process to reveal the real root cause. One of the methods that works this way is the Shainin System of problem-solving.

The Shainin System relies on simple and often already available statistical tools that are highly intuitive and rely on technical common sense. They are organized in a well-prescribed sequence acronymed as FACTUAL. Compared to other problem-solving processes, this approach has been found to be faster, more accurate, more flexible, more efficient and productive, less complicated, and easier to implement.

This course introduces the functions of the Shainin System, along with a set of methods that support it: solution trees, isoplots, component searches, Multivari charts, progressive searches, “better vs. current,” tolerance parallelogram, and precontrol. These tools are not only graphical and easy to grasp but are highly effective. Each method is supported by simple mathematical reasoning and is illustrated with practical examples to make their understanding easier.

Mastering these tools will allow you to more easily troubleshoot problems related to products, processes and services. Moreover, being simple to grasp and highly graphical, those tools will ease the reporting process and the acceptance of the results by non-technical personnel.

This course will help engineers, design engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, project engineers, and engineering managers quickly understand and better resolve the small and large scale problems related to their products, services, and processes.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Differences between the cause-to-effect methods of problem-solving and the effect-to-cause methods of finding solutions (the Shainin System)
  • The assumptions and basic concepts of the Shainin System of Problem solving
  • The structure of the Shainin process as embodied in the FACTUAL step sequence and what each of those steps involves
  • The statistical tools often used at each FACTUAL step
  • The theoretical background, specifics, function, applicability, and execution of several statistical methods used to support the Shainin System of problem-solving
  • The best practices for successfully applying the Shainin System
  • The limitations of the Shainin System of Problem solving
  • How the Shainin System of Problem solving compares with Six-Sigma, Kepner-Tregoe and Taguchi DoE

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
