Illinois professional engineer licenses renew November 30 of odd numbered years. Structural engineers renew November 30 of even numbered years.

Illinois PEs are required to earn 30 PDH biennially. And Professional Engineers can earn all of the required PDH using online courses such as those on PDHengineer.com. While the state board does not mandate or pre-approve specific courses or providers, they do require that courses "contribute to the advancement, extension or enhancement of the professional skills and/or scientific knowledge of the licensee in the practice of professional engineering."

Below is a summary of the Board's continuing education requirements for engineers licensed in the state of Illinois:

The course must "contribute to the advancement, extension or enhancement of the professional skills and/or scientific knowledge of the licensee in practice of professional engineering" and "foster the enhancement of general or specialized practice and values of professional engineering, related sciences and engineering ethics." |
| Online Courses | For Professional Engineers, there is no limit on the number of PDH's
that can be earned through online continuing education.
For Structural Engineers, no more than 10 hours of the 30 hours required may be earned through online continuing education. |
| PDH Carryover | Hours cannot be carried forward into the next renewal period. |
