South Dakota Professional Engineers

Continuing Education (PDH) Requirements

South Dakota's professional engineers have been using PDHengineer.com since 2003 to earn high quality continuing education.PDHengineer has an Iron-Clad Money-Back Guarantee

Over the years, thousands of engineers have completed online courses that have been accepted by the South Dakota board. In fact, we've never had one of our courses rejected by ANY state engineering board. We're confident enough to offer an iron-clad money back guarantee. If any PDHengineer.com online course is rejected by your state engineering board for any reason, you get your money back. Period.

South Dakota PEs are required to earn 30 PDH biennially, and all of your PDH can be earned with online courses*. While the state board does not mandate or pre-approve specific courses or providers, they do require that at least 20 of the 30 required hours be in "technical subjects that lead to further professional development in the registrant's profession."

Specific technical subjects cited by the board include design; environmental analysis; programming and planning; structural systems; lateral forces; mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and acoustical systems; construction methods; construction observation; site and soil analyses and design; accessibility; building codes; selection of building materials; and surveying methods and techniques. The remaining 10 PDH may be earned in professional management subjects, such as total quality process, computer courses, or ethics.

The Board allows "successful completion of correspondence, televised, videotaped, audio taped, Internet and other short courses or tutorials with verifiable passing scores from examinations.” Note that all PDHengineer online courses require the completion of an online multiple-choice quiz with a passing grade of 70%. While you may attempt the online quiz as many times as necessary at no additional charge, you will not be able to access your certificate of completion until you pass the online quiz. Also, note that your quiz score is permanently stored in your online login account and can be retrieved by you at any time to comply with the Board’s requirement for “verifiable passing scores.” PDHengineer's testing mechanism for online courses meets the Board's intent, which has been demonstrated over the years by many South Dakota PE's who have successfully submitted PDHengineer online courses to the Board for PDH credit.

We offer a wide variety of course subjects including today's hottest engineering topics. Our web based seminars give you the opportunity to attend a live interactive seminar without leaving your home or office.

How It Works

Completing a PDHengineer course is easy.

  • Search for a course, then study the course material.
  • Click on the Take Quiz button at the bottom of the course page and follow the instructions to create an account.
  • Complete the short online quiz. The quiz is scored automatically by our system. A passing score of 70% is required. You may retake the quiz as many times as required until you pass.
  • Instantly access and print your Certificate of Completion online.

PDHengineer.com has more than 2,500 hours of engineering continuing education online. It's convenient and cost-effective since you can take the course day or night in your own home or office.
