Subject Matter Expert Gilliam S. "Gill" Harris, P.E., S.E.

 

Gilliam S. "Gill" Harris, P.E., S.E., has been a Structural Engineer since 1950 and retired in 2001 from Ceco Building Systems as Director of Engineering, Southern Region after 23 years of service. Formerly he was Director of Research and Engineering for Metal Building Manufacturers Association for 6 years and Chairman of its Technical Committee for 3 of the years while at Ceco.

Mr. Harris holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Rice University.

He is a fellow and Life Member of American Society of Civil Engineers serving on its committees for Design Loads on Buildings - ASCE 7 (since 1974); Loads During Construction - ASCE 37 (since 1990); and Progressive Collapse Committee – ASCE (since 2006). He is a Life Member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and Mensa.

Mr. Harris wrote the original version of the MBMA Wind Standard using the early University of Western Ontario research which was subsequently accepted into the Standard Building Code. The ASCE 7 Standard is used in the International Building Code.

Current activities include consulting to metal building companies, lectures to engineers for continuing education and forensic investigation of wind and water damage.
