This seminar introduces the basic principles of electricity in a simple, easy to understand format. Participants will learn how to determine voltage, current, power and power factor using two alternate methods: straight-forward, common calculations, as well as charts and tables.

Practical examples of electrical applications in industrial settings are provided. The seminar also covers electrical equipment, components, devices and test instrumentation, as well as important electrical safety concepts. Cross-discipline analogies are used from mechanical, hydraulics and civil engineering, where applicable, to better illustrate the fundamental concepts of electrical engineering.

This seminar caters to engineers of all disciplines, as well as technicians, facilities managers and executives who are not intimately familiar with electrical engineering principles and practices. The seminar is based on the principles in the book Electrical Engineering for Non-Electrical Engineers, S. Bobby Rauf, Fairmont Press, 2013.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

    • The principles and concepts associated with AC and DC electricity, and the distinction between these two realms of electricity
    • Basic DC and AC circuit analysis
    • Phasor, polar and rectangular representation of AC
    • Brief introduction to three-phase AC voltage, current and impedance
    • Concepts of power factor, power quality, load factor and service factor
    • Electrical control systems; i.e. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), control diagrams, drives, sensors and examples of automation systems
    • The role played by voltage and current angles in the determination of power factor
    • How addition of power factor correcting capacitors results in improvement of power factors and the mystery behind “addition of too much capacitance,” and how to avoid it
    • Three-phase AC, Y and Delta configuration of loads and sources
    • How transformers work and their role in voltage and current transformation
    • Power distribution equipment and instrumentation
    • The role that NEC and NFPA 70 E play in the field of electrical design, electrical safety and arc flash hazards
    • How PLCs work and how to interpret contemporary electrical control drawings
    • How electrical power bills are calculated under large industrial and commercial contract scenarios, and take away some tips on electrical cost reduction
