This seminar introduces the basic principles of mechanical engineering in a simple, easy to understand format. Participants will learn how to accomplish straight-forward and common mechanical engineering calculations in the areas of statics, kinetics, kinematics, materials, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, hydraulic machines, thermodynamics, psychrometrics, and the refrigeration cycle.
Mechanical engineering concepts, analytical techniques and principles are demonstrated through practical numerical problems and case studies. The seminar also covers financial evaluation and decision making associated with typical engineering projects.
This seminar caters to engineers of all disciplines, as well as technicians, facilities managers and executives who are not intimately familiar with mechanical engineering principles and practices. Cross-discipline analogies are used, where applicable, to better illustrate the fundamental concepts of mechanical engineering.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Systems of units and common instruments employed in the practice of mechanical engineering
- A review of statics, including concepts, laws and problem analysis techniques associated with beams and truss systems in equilibrium, under point and distributed loads
- Mechanics of materials, fluid statics, hydrodynamics and hydraulic machines
- Dynamics – Kinematics: The kinematics topic provides an introduction to concepts, laws and analytical techniques pertinent to motion in the absence of unbalanced forces
- Dynamics – Kinetics: The kinetics topic introduces the attendees to concepts, laws and problem analysis techniques associated with bodies or objects in motion, when motion is influenced by unbalanced forces
- Thermodynamics and the proper application of saturated steam and superheated steam tables
- The refrigeration cycle, including thermodynamic processes associated with each segment of the refrigeration cycle
