This course will discuss the most common types of retaining walls that are used on construction projects and why these walls are so popular. Wall types that will be discussed are cast-in-place concrete, gabion, large precast concrete block, and modular block retaining walls, among others. The advantages and disadvantages of each wall system will be highlighted so that the attendees will be able to better understand each wall type.

Cast-in-place concrete walls can be designed by most structural engineers using typical concrete design principles and codes, but these types of walls are usually not the most economical retaining wall system for the application. On the other hand, MSE walls are usually the most economical retaining option for most situations, but these types of walls have strict limitations for the soil used in their construction and there are a lot of specific requirements related to their construction that may not be obvious to the contractor. Gravity walls typically should only be used in niche situations.

Relative costs of each wall type will be provided. Limitations of each type of wall system will be discussed. The interaction of each wall type with other site features such as storm structures, buildings, and utilities will be discussed. After conclusion of this webinar, the attendee will be able to properly specify the most economical retaining wall system for their specific project. This course is a recording of a live webinar.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Best applications of a cast-in-place concrete retaining wall
  • Alternatives to cast-in-place retaining wall construction
  • Basic concepts of MSE systems
  • Site layout considerations when locating and specifying a retaining wall
