Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above).

In Basic Overview of Stormwater Management , you'll learn ...

  • A brief history of stormwater management from antiquity to the present day
  • Stormwater management ordinances
  • The different methods of stormwater detention
  • The elements of a storm sewer system
  • Six ways to reduce stormwater runoff

Due to suburban and urban development, the quantity of and the speed with which stormwater runoff is entering streams, lakes, and rivers has increased dramatically, causing more frequent flooding and adding sediment and pollution that hurts stream life. At the same time, groundwater reserves are diminishing. This predicament makes the management of stormwater runoff vitally important. In this webinar, engineers will receive a basic overview of stormwater management without having to delve into advanced stormwater management calculations or design software.

We begin the webinar with a brief history of stormwater management, looking at examples from ancient Rome, the Incan civilization, and, more recently, the Panama Canal. Next we will review the latest stormwater management requirements. Participants in this interactive webinar will learn the different methods of stormwater detention and the situations where and when each might be appropriate. You will also learn the components of a storm sewer system, and site layout examples will show you how those components work together to convey stormwater runoff. The final portion of the webinar focuses on stormwater quality, particularly the standard erosion control practices used to protect groundwater and surface water quality, as well as some of the newer practices in the construction industry.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • A brief history of stormwater management (e.g., Roman aqueducts, Incan hydraulics, the Panama Canal)
  • The fundamental elements of stormwater management
  • Stormwater management ordinances
  • The different types and components of stormwater detention
  • The elements of a storm sewer system
  • The different types of sedimentation and erosion control practices

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
