Subject Matter Expert: M.A. Karim, P.E., PhD, Fellow ASCE
In Hazardous Waste Stabilization and Solidification , you'll learn ...
- The definitions of stabilization and solidification as they are used in hazardous waste (HW) management and treatment
- The related regulations and applications of stabilization and solidification when managing HW
- Various technologies using reagents to HW stabilization and solidification, and the different types of testing that ensure compliance with federal guidelines
Overview
To meet the Ohio Board's intent that online courses be "paced" by the provider, a timer will be used to record your study time. You will be unable to access the quiz until the required study time of 109 minutes has been met.

Duration: 109 minutes
In this course, we will define stabilization, solidification, and the related terms used in hazardous waste management and treatment. We will also cover the regulations and applications of stabilization and solidification when managing HW. The different mechanisms of HW management will be elaborated, including microencapsulation, absorption, adsorption, precipitation, and detoxification.
We will also discuss various technologies that use reagents in HW stabilization and solidification, including cement, pozzolans, lime, soluble silicates, and many others. The different types of testing that ensure compliance with federal guidelines will also be explained, which will include, in part, extraction and leaching tests, paint filter tests, liquid release tests, and extraction procedure toxicity tests.
Finally, real-life field implementation of HW stabilization and solidification will be covered in methods such as In-Drum Mixing Alternatives, In-Situ Mixing Alternatives, Plant Mixing Alternatives, followed by an explanation of a system design stabilization flow-chart.
This video is a recording of a live webinar training session. As a recording of a live event, you will hear the discussion that occurred between the instructor and those who attended this webinar.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The basics of HW stabilization and solidification.
- Different mechanisms used in HW management.
- Different technologies and reagents used for HW stabilization and solidification.
- EPA test methods that facilitate compliance with federal guidelines.
- An understanding of field implementation of HW management using visual examples and a design stabilization flow-chart.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
