Basics of Water Treatment (Ohio Timed & Monitored Video)
Credit: 2 PDH
Subject Matter Expert: M.A. Karim, P.E., PhD, Fellow ASCE
In Basics of Water Treatment , you'll learn ...
- Water chemistry as it relates to water treatment
- Reaction kinetics, water quality, and water quality standards
- The concepts of coagulation/flocculation, water softening process, sedimentation, filtrations, and adsorption
- How to understand the design of unit processes for water treatment
Overview
To meet the Ohio Board's intent that online courses be "paced" by the provider, a timer will be used to record your study time. You will be unable to access the quiz until the required study time of 115 minutes has been met.

Duration: 115 minutes
In this course, we will lay a foundational knowledge by defining several terms related to water chemistry, including standard units and their uses, reaction kinetics, water quality, and water quality standards. A treatment system flow-diagram will be explained, offering a visualization of the workings of a water treatment plant.
We will then analyze the fundamentals of unit processes design, including sedimentation tank, coagulation/flocculation dose, and softening dose, and work through several problems together to practice the application of these terms.
Armed with this knowledge, several water plant waste management problems will be solved using common equations and standard practice, placing the information into real-world applications, and offering a solid understanding of the material.
This video is a recording of a live webinar training session. As a recording of a live event, you will hear the discussion that occurred between the instructor and those who attended this webinar.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the application of water chemistry to modern water treatment.
- Identify industry standards for water quality and water treatment.
- Describe the basic functions represented in a treatment-system flow diagram.
- Apply unit-process design principles to relevant water-treatment issues.
- Solve selected water-treatment-plant waste-management problems using industry-standard equations.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
