Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above).

In Valve Basics , you'll learn ...

  • Common valve types and how they work
  • The main components of a valve
  • The pros and cons of each type of valve
  • How to choose the correct valve for the application

Every engineering process requires the ability to stop, start, and regulate flow. Valves are thus a fundamental part of any system that conveys gases, liquids, or solids. But what are valves? How do they work? And why do they have such weird names, e.g., butterfly valve? This course will help you answer all these questions and many more.

This course will give you all the information you need to know about each valve type and can also be used later as a refresher course. Irrespective of your engineering background, this course will enrich your engineering career, because valves are truly everywhere!

Interactive 3D models are used extensively to show you the inner workings of various types of valves. The course is packed with 2D images, 2D animations, and 3D animations.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Rotary and Linear Motion Valves
  • Valve Construction and Components
  • Valve Actuators
  • Pressure Drop
  • Response Time
  • Length of Travel
  • Ball, butterfly, diaphragm, gate, globe, pinch, plug and check valves

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 15 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
