Overview
Most engineering projects have the potential to impact the environment. Engineers are entrusted to create designs that comply with regulatory requirements and obtain the necessary regulatory approvals and permits in a timely manner so the project can move forward. Obtaining environmental permits can be challenging and complex, involving multiple agencies. Obtaining these permits often takes longer than initially assumed, which often delays the project from starting construction.
This course introduces the reader to common environmental permits, including air permits, stormwater permits, wastewater permits, solid waste permits, floodplain development, coastal development, tree removal, and wetland permits. For each permit, there is a discussion on the regulatory agencies, typical documents to submit, and example applications.
Also covered is the role of categorical exclusions, environmental assessments and environmental impact statements. General approaches to permitting are presented with advice for being efficient and effective at obtaining permits. An example permit tracking log and baseline schedule is included.
