In Exploring Subsurface Investigations, SPT, and CPT (Video on Demand) , you'll learn ...
- How to plan and execute effective field investigations
- How to choose appropriate exploration methods
- How to apply in-situ testing to extract meaningful geotechnical data
Overview
Subsurface exploration and in-situ testing are the cornerstones of reliable geotechnical design and construction. This comprehensive course merges two essential topics—subsurface investigation methods and in-situ testing using the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Cone Penetration Test (CPT)—to provide participants with a well-rounded understanding of site characterization. Engineers will learn how to plan and execute effective field investigations, choose appropriate exploration methods, and apply in-situ testing to extract meaningful geotechnical data.
Topics include planning fieldwork, selecting exploration tools for both small- and large-scale projects, and understanding the differences between sampling techniques. The course also walks through common drilling methods such as auger and rotary wash, as well as guidelines for minimum investigation standards. In the second half, participants will learn the application of SPT and CPT, including corrections to raw SPT-N values, soil behavior type classification from CPT data, and the use of test results in profiling subsurface conditions.
Ideal for civil engineers, geotechnical professionals, architects, and construction managers, this course delivers technical depth with real-world relevance. Whether refreshing foundational knowledge or learning new techniques, participants will gain valuable insights.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Planning and execution of subsurface investigations and site characterization
- Common drilling methods and soil sampling techniques (disturbed vs. undisturbed)
- Standard Penetration Test (SPT) procedures, corrections, and limitations
- Cone Penetration Test (CPT) principles, parameters, and soil classification
- Interpretation of in-situ test data for engineering property correlations
- Advantages and limitations of SPT and CPT in geotechnical applications
Video on Demand
This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
