With increasing equipment costs and limited availability of industrial plant real estate, compact heat exchangers are gaining a large portion of the heat exchange market. These are characterized by high heat transfer surface area to volume ratios, as well as high heat transfer coefficients compared to other exchanger types.

A plate heat exchanger is a type of compact heat exchanger that uses metal plates to transfer heat between two fluids. First invented in 1923 for dairy applications, plate heat exchangers have numerous configurations. Industrial standards are enforced through API, TEMA and ISO standards, among others.

In this course, we will examine key concepts of plate heat exchanger design, rating, sizing and testing. You will learn concepts of fouling, pressure drop, spiral plate heat exchangers, quality control and non- destructive testing.

This course serves a dual purpose, both as a continuing education refresher course for experienced engineers and as an introduction for those with little knowledge in this area.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Thermal Design of Plate and Spiral Plate Heat Exchangers, Sizing & Rating
  • Fouling
  • Mechanical Design of Plate & Spiral Plate Heat Exchangers
  • Quality Control & Non-Destructive Testing

Video on Demand

This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
