For Small Quantity Generators (SQGs), compliance is not just about day-to-day waste handling—it is about understanding how short-term changes in waste generation can affect regulatory obligations.

RCRA generator categories are based solely on how much hazardous waste is generated in a calendar month, not on facility size, industry, or staffing levels. This course explains the differences between Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQGs), Small Quantity Generators (SQGs), and Large Quantity Generators (LQGs). Generator status can change from month to month, often due to maintenance activities, cleanouts, spill response, or production changes. Even a single month of increased waste generation can move a facility into LQG status, triggering additional requirements. Understanding how and when waste must be counted is critical to avoiding accidental noncompliance.

Episodic generation is a regulatory tool designed to help VSQGs and SQGs manage unusual or short-term waste generation events without unnecessary escalation. By following the notification, labeling, and timing requirements, facilities can remain in their normal generator category while still managing hazardous waste safely and legally. Episodic generation is especially valuable during planned maintenance projects or unexpected events such as spills or equipment failures.
