This course is the second volume of a two-volume series on Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). The first volume described the basics of VFDs. Volume I provided a broad introduction to VFDs and the electric motor designs, explained the benefits of VFDs, and provided a detailed examination of VFD theory.

This volume is a continuation of Volume I and describes the installation and reliability considerations for VFDs, as well as a detailed analysis of troubleshooting and diagnostics. Chapter One covers installation and reliability issues. Chapter Two provides detailed coverage of troubleshooting and diagnostics.

For the best understanding of VFDs, these two courses should be taken in sequence.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The environmental factors, enclosure requirements, and altitude derating considerations that influence VFD reliability
  • The verification of input power quality, grounding systems, and bonding practices required for proper VFD installation
  • The selection, routing, and protection of VFD-rated motor cables to minimize reflected-wave overvoltages and EMI issues
  • The use of line reactors, output reactors, and dV/dt filters to improve system performance and equipment protection
  • The commissioning process, including pre-power inspections, parameter configuration, and motor autotuning procedures
  • The preventive maintenance practices used to extend capacitor, cooling fan, and power electronics service life
  • The identification and mitigation of bearing current damage in inverter-driven motor systems
  • The troubleshooting methodology used to isolate faults within the drive, motor, or mechanical load
  • The diagnosis and correction of overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, ground fault, communication, and temperature-related problems
  • How to safely perform VFD testing, diagnostics, and maintenance while managing DC bus and arc-flash hazards
