Resilient Facilities using Microgrids, Storage and the Art of Islanding (Webinar)
Credit: 3 PDH
Subject Matter Expert: Matthew Haupt, P.E., CEM, CPP
Type: Live Interactive Webinar
In Resilient Facilities using Microgrids, Storage and the Art of Islanding (Webinar), you'll learn ...
- The principles of energy resiliency and their relationship to energy security and mission assurance
- The planning and operation of resilient facilities using microgrids, energy storage, and distributed energy resources
- The evaluation of risks, critical loads, and implementation strategies for resilient energy systems
- How to improve facility resilience through effective design, testing, commissioning, and operational planning
Overview
This webinar explores how to engineer facilities that can keep critical missions running when the grid decides to take a coffee break. Participants will learn the fundamentals of energy security utilizing such things as microgrids, on site generation, energy storage, and islanding strategies, and how to integrate them into existing infrastructure without making the facilities manager panic. The session blends practical design considerations, case studies, and simple modeling approaches to help engineers turn resilience requirements into executable systems that work in the real world—rather than just in glossy concept diagrams.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The differences between power and energy and their significance in resilient energy system design
- The distinctions among resiliency, reliability, and efficiency in energy engineering
- The identification of mission-critical loads and the assessment of operational outage tolerance
- The principles of energy risk management, including hazard identification, assessment, mitigation, and review
- The definition, components, and operating modes of a microgrid, including islanded operation
- The characteristics, advantages, and limitations of distributed energy resources and battery energy storage systems
- The engineering considerations involved in transitioning between grid-connected, islanded, reconnect, and black-start operations
- The implementation of retrofit strategies, cybersecurity measures, and system boundaries for resilient facilities
- The importance of testing, commissioning, and operational readiness in ensuring resilient system performance
- The application of resiliency concepts through real-world military and healthcare facility case studies
