This streaming video course is designed to provide participants with a complete and detailed understanding of System Engineering concepts and practices. Attendees will acquire knowledge related to the guidelines and application of Systems Engineering as it applies to product and process development and will acquire a foundational understanding of Systems Engineering – leading to the successful development of complex systems.

Instruction will be focused on what characterizes a design and development project along with providing an understanding of the management principles used to develop new products and processes. This will include strategies designed to identify, address and assess project risk factors by offering methods to implement best practices through the product development life-cycle.

Subject matter to be covered will include a straightforward description of engineering management disciplines that relate to the development of, the management of, and the creation of a new and/or improved product/process.

The technical topics to be covered will include conceptual design procedures, process engineering, value engineering, software and operational interactions, simulation and rapid prototyping, computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM), design review techniques, the System Engineering Management Plan (SEMP), supplier and outsourcing proficiency, quality and maintenance practices and risk management.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define systems engineering and identify the fundamental characteristics of an engineered system, including the interactions among personnel, hardware, software, facilities, procedures, and other system components.
  • Identify and describe the principal phases of the systems engineering life cycle, from conceptual design and requirements development through prototyping, production, operation, maintenance, and retirement.
  • Analyze stakeholder needs and operational requirements to establish system performance criteria, allocate requirements to subsystems, and support engineering design decisions.
  • Differentiate verification from validation and identify appropriate testing and evaluation procedures for determining whether an engineered system satisfies technical specifications and end-user requirements.
  • Apply systems engineering design principles, including human factors engineering, hazard analysis, fault tree analysis, and risk mitigation, to evaluate system safety, reliability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Evaluate the applications and benefits of model-based systems engineering, computer-aided design, simulation, rapid prototyping, and process mapping in the development and assessment of complex systems.
  • Identify the principal components of a Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and explain its relationship to project planning, technical management, resource coordination, and stakeholder requirements.
  • Assess the purpose and requirements of a Critical Design Review (CDR), including the evaluation of design documentation, technical performance, manufacturing readiness, reliability, and life-cycle support.
  • Analyze proposed engineering modifications using formal change control procedures to determine their potential effects on system configuration, technical performance, quality, project costs, and schedules.
  • Compare functional, product-line, and matrix organizational structures and evaluate their effectiveness in coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams, allocating resources, and managing systems engineering projects.

Video on Demand

This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
