Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above). However, if you are not licensed in Ohio, it is suggested that you purchase the self-paced version of the course.

In Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) for NPDES Construction Sites, you'll learn ...

  • The necessary steps for developing and implementing an effective SWPPP
  • Key principles and best practices for preventing contamination of stormwater from a wide range of materials and wastes at a construction site
  • Effective methods of erosion and sediment control (ESC)
  • Guidelines for site inspections, maintenance activities, and recordkeeping

Water quality can be dramatically impacted by inadequate construction site erosion and sediment control measures. For these reasons, the Environmental Protection Agency regulates even relatively small construction sites under the Phase II National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations. The most critical requirement of the NPDES construction site general permit is the preparation and implementation of a SWPPP.

This course explains how to develop and implement a SWPPP. The course is intended for practicing engineers, contractors, developers, regulators, and all other personnel involved with construction sites. Understanding the requirements for the creation and implementation of a SWPPP is essential to staying in compliance with the law. Moreover, an adequately designed SWPPP is the primary tool needed to reduce water quality impacts from construction activities.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • When and why you need a SWPPP
  • Impacts of stormwater runoff
  • The Federal requirements for stormwater runoff from construction sites
  • What elements are required in a SWPPP
  • SWPPP roles and responsibilities
  • Common SWPPP objectives Developing a SWPPP using site analysis and planning
  • Fundamentals of the erosion process
  • Proper selection of Best Management Practices (BMPs)
  • Inspection and maintenance of BMPs
  • Certification and Notification requirements
  • SWPPP Implementation
  • Final stabilization and permit termination

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
