Alan and Bob are staying in two different rooms in the same hotel. Alan has a valuable ring that he wants to give to Bob, but the hotel is haunted with ghosts lurking around the hotel, trying to find and hurt both Alan and Bob. Because of this, neither of them are able to safely leave their room. The only way they are able to transfer items to and from each other is with the help of the bellhops that work at the hotel. Alan and Bob each have a small portable safe that can be secured with multiple locks, and Alan and Bob also each have a padlock and corresponding key. Unfortunately, the bellhops cannot be trusted and will steal anything and everything that is inside the safes if they are unlocked.
How can Alan securely send the valuable ring to Bob without it being stolen?

Alan puts the ring in a safe and padlocks it, sends it to Bob who padlocks it and sends it back to Alan, Alan removes his padlock and sends it back to Bob, Bob removes his padlock and the ring.
Bob sends his empty safe with padlock unlocked to Alan. Bob keeps the key. Alan locks the ring inside the safe and sends it back. Bob can then open it with his key.
