Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above). However, if you are not licensed in Ohio, it is suggested that you purchase the self-paced version of the course.

In Determining Negligence in Engineering Failures, you'll learn ...

  • Horizontal moments and strength requirements for poles
  • How to calculate the expected loads on poles and crossarms
  • Maximum allowable span lengths
  • Calculations for vertical and horizontal loadings of crossarms

Length: 57 pages

This 3-hour course is the first in a series of three courses about the mechanical design of electric power distribution facilities. This volume of the series addresses pole and crossarm loading and explains how to calculate the expected loads on poles and crossarms and how to properly size equipment for the loads.

The course is divided into seven short chapters. The course begins with an overview of pole loading issues and then describes horizontal moments on poles and strength requirements for poles. Determination of maximum allowable span lengths are explained and calculations are provided for vertical and horizontal loading of crossarms.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The factors influencing pole loading
  • How to calculate pole strength requirements
  • Crossarm loading issues
  • How to calculate vertical crossarm loading
  • How to calculate horizontal crossarm loading
  • The concept of “permitted load”
  • The concept of pole resisting moments

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
