Steel erection can be dangerous business. The close proximity of workers to heavy equipment, overhead lifts and potentially unstable structures, combined with working at heights pose significant risks to workers that must be managed by the project.

In July, 2001, OSHA issued the latest revision of 29 CFR 1960.750 Subpart R "Steel Erection". This subpart sets forth requirements to protect employees from the hazards associated with steel erection activities involved in the construction, alteration, and/or repair of single and multi-story buildings, bridges, and other structures where steel erection occurs.

In this course, the student will review the requirements of 29CFR1960.750 Subpart R "Steel Erection". This course is relevant to engineers involved in all areas of steel erection, including structural design engineers since Subpart R addresses design issues, such as structural steel framing and connection details.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Site layout requirements and construction sequence for steel erection
  • Safe rigging and hoisting procedures, including working under loads
  • Multiple lift rigging procedures
  • Decking, including roof and floor openings
  • Requirements for anchor bolts, beams and columns
  • Attachment and erection of steel joists, including erection bridging
  • Erection of pre-engineered metal buildings
  • Fall protection and falling object protection
