This course discusses two common methods of storm water runoff and detention, the Rational (Modified Rational) and SCS Methods. In depth discussion of input variables along with limitations for each method will allow the student to more accurately model detention for a particular site, while maintaining practical engineering practices. The accuracy of each method is evaluated by using examples of different method calculations and comparisons to measured flows.

This course is relevant for consulting engineers and municipal engineers involved in the planning, design, and/or review of storm water drainage and detention systems.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Selection of appropriate Rational c values and SCS CN values using recent design information.
  • Assumptions and limitations of the Modified Rational and SCS Methods.
  • Comparison of calculated Rational and SCS flows to recorded flows.
  • Comparison of Modified Rational and SCS detention designs to measured pond outflows.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
