Data acquisition systems are common in nearly all areas of science and engineering, from research laboratories to production lines. The cost of data acquisition equipment continues to decrease, while performance improves. The equipment is used in measurement, communications, and many other applications. Despite their prevalence and apparent ease-of-use, data acquisition systems can provide incorrect results when improperly selected or used – an occurrence that is much more common than one might expect. This course presents the fundamental principles of data acquisition and will benefit anyone specifying, selecting, or using data acquisition equipment.

The course features graphical depictions of key concepts including time- and frequency-domain plots of aliasing as well as common filter types. The most common analog-digital converter architectures are introduced and their relative features compared and contrasted. The course also provides valuable reference information.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Aliasing: cause and consequences
