Failing masonry tests are reported by inspection firms to design engineers every day. There is little understanding by both the inspection firm and design engineer as to what exactly these tests represent. This is the result of misunderstood specifications and incorrectly applied quality assurance testing. Hours of unnecessary time are spent by the inspection firm to answer why, and by the design engineer to analyze the structure. This course will provide guidance on how to prevent these situations by discussing the properties of masonry components, inspection and testing requirements, and common testing errors. Throughout the course, recommendations will be provided to engineers on how to avoid potential pitfalls by proper detailing and specifying meaningful tests.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How to identify material in the field
  • ASTM test methods appropriate to masonry
  • ASTM procedures for casting samples
  • How inspection actually occurs in the field
  • When and how to specify testing
  • Questions to ask when receiving failing tests
  • How to add clarity to design details
  • Recommendations on inspector qualifications

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
