This 5-hour course reviews overvoltage situations on electric utility distribution systems and the primary methods to protect the utility system from overvoltages. The principle cause of overvoltages on an electric distribution system is lightning surges. Lightning surges are covered in detail as well as the design and operation of surge arresters. Protection methods including shielding, surge arrester application, and structure design are discussed. The importance of grounding to proper overvoltage protection is also reviewed.
