This course provides the engineer with an overview of various types of accidental chemical or physical explosions that can result in bodily injury and/or loss of property and equipment. The course identifies hazardous area classifications in which explosions can occur, methods of designing systems that detect explosive levels or concentrations of materials, and intrinsically safe systems that mitigate the risk of an explosion.

Additionally, this course reviews relevant guidelines and regulations as they pertain to systems, equipment, and procedures utilized in mitigating the risk of an explosion, such as the application of rupture discs, blast venting, and containment.

The course is beneficial to anyone who will be working with or around any types of equipment or materials that can potentially result in an explosion and want to understand how the risk of an explosion can be mitigated. Anyone working in industries such as chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, power, and research should find this course of interest.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Basic chemistry and classifications of explosions
  • Hazardous area classifications
  • Intrinsically safe systems and components
