Worldwide, there is a significant amount of offshore wind energy production, however, wind energy production in the United States lags behind Europe and Asia. A majority of energy demand in the United States lies in its coastal regions, which provide great opportunity for offshore wind energy development. In this course, we will review the electric generation potential for offshore wind turbines. Wind energy resources, detailed descriptions of wind energy turbines, and the types of foundations used for offshore wind energy turbines will be addressed.

We will also consider the coastal areas with the greatest potential for offshore wind energy by considering factors such as water depth and wind speed. Environmental concerns and cost considerations will also be covered.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The benefits of offshore wind energy
  • The current market status in both the U.S. And worldwide
  • How wind resources are categorized
  • The components of a wind turbine generator
  • The types of foundations used for offshore wind energy
  • The cost structure of offshore wind energy
  • The environmental impacts of installing offshore wind turbines

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
