Acceleration can be felt and experienced but not seen, which makes dynamic systems much more difficult to visualize than static systems that are only subject to forces and/or displacements. The direction the acceleration is acting, and thus the direction of the force it creates, is confusing at times. Complex motion of bodies causes varying acceleration rates along a body, making it very hard to determine the stress in a component created by such motion.

All things that are in motion experience acceleration of some kind at some time. Rotating equipment subjects components to centrifugal acceleration that can be constant or varying depending on the motion. Other machines and structures in motion experience acceleration when the magnitude or direction of velocity changes. When there is clearance between parts that make contact, acceleration of one body relative to another across this gap can create high impact forces. Designing components and systems for forces created by such accelerations is more difficult than for non-moving equipment, machines, or structures.

This course is an overview of dynamics with a consideration of particles, rigid bodies, and flexible bodies. It is intended to help the engineer determine when each type of analysis is appropriate and how to apply them. It should aid in determining acceleration and force direction identification and in designing for these non-static loads.
