Due to suburban and urban development, the quantity of and the speed with which stormwater runoff is entering streams, lakes, and rivers has increased dramatically, causing more frequent flooding and adding sediment and pollution that hurts stream life. At the same time, groundwater reserves are diminishing. This predicament makes the management of stormwater runoff vitally important. In this webinar, engineers will receive a basic overview of stormwater management without having to delve into advanced stormwater management calculations or design software.

We begin the webinar with a brief history of stormwater management, looking at examples from ancient Rome, the Incan civilization, and, more recently, the Panama Canal. Next we will review the latest stormwater management requirements. Participants in this interactive webinar will learn the different methods of stormwater detention and the situations where and when each might be appropriate. You will also learn the components of a storm sewer system, and site layout examples will show you how those components work together to convey stormwater runoff. The final portion of the webinar focuses on stormwater quality, particularly the standard erosion control practices used to protect groundwater and surface water quality, as well as some of the newer practices in the construction industry.
