The use of cement-like products dates back thousands of years as early versions of cement were manufactured from gypsum, limestone, volcanic ash, and other natural resources.

The modern version of cement began in 1824 when Joseph Aspdin applied for a patent on a mixture of limestone and clay he cooked in his kitchen.

Today, cement is the world’s most common building material, with worldwide consumption exceeding 4 billion tons consumed annually. In the US alone, the 2015 consumption of cement was 83.4 million tons.

Manufacturing a consistent and reliable product in such vast quantities requires specialized equipment and processes, along with significant amounts of energy, materials, and expertise. In our course, we’ll talk about some key components of cement and its manufacture.

In doing so, we’ll take a "tour" of a typical cement plant and provide an in-depth explanation of machines and processes used to make this familiar grey powder. We’ll see photographs and mock-ups of the machines and systems used in the manufacturing, and we’ll discuss the content and chemistry of the product.

You will come away with a great overview of the world’s most common building material.
