Overview

In Soil Testing, Identification, and Uses, you'll learn ...

  • Understand the difference between lab testing and in-situ testing
  • Be able to know what soil parameters are needed for a specific design and what tests to specify in order to determine those parameters
  • Realize the difference between soil parameters and how each contributes differently to the soil system

Overview

A PDHengineer webinar is just like being there.

4 Easy Steps to Complete a PDHengineer webinar

This webinar will discuss how the various components of the soil matrix create different conditions in the earth. Many soil properties are related to each other but are not the same. It is important to understand the intricate differences between soil parameters. We will see how these different properties affect the design of engineered structures and how to account for potential changes in the properties of the soil during the life of the structure.

Average ranges of various properties will be provided to the engineer in order to assist with conceptual understanding and future preliminary design and analysis. We will discuss various testing methods related to the soil to determine these properties - both in-situ and lab testing procedures and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of procedure.

Test pits, hand augers, SPT, CPT are all in-situ tests that will be discussed in depth. Three different types of sieve testing, and multiple types of strength testing will be the lab testing procedures discussed. Proctors and their relationship with compaction testing will conclude the webinar.

After completion of the webinar, the attendee will understand what type of testing should be considered for their specific project, how to read the results of the test, and how to apply the results into a design. Attendees will also understand what type of testing should be performed during construction to ensure that construction is in compliance with the design.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understand the actual components of soil
  • How to test soil for pertinent information for design purposes
  • What types of soil tests are best suited for specific projects
  • Which soil properties are provided by which soil test
  • How soils are different from each other

PDH Credits

Webinars earn PDH credits for engineers in all jurisdictions, unless otherwise stated in the literature for a specific webinar, and are accepted as "live" courses by engineering boards with a requirement for "live" training.
