In this webinar, you will learn how to design materials for static strength. We will cover the application of basic material properties from standard tensile tests to guide your designs, specifically to avoid material yielding, buckling, and collapse. The concepts of materials, stress, and strain, as applied to solid mechanics and mechanical design, will also be reviewed.

To accomplish this objective, you will be introduced to the load resistance design method. This will be applied to each of the failure modes taught in this course. Next, the standard materials test will be reviewed, followed by a demonstration of taking those laboratory results into a real-world operating environment. Then, a review of solid mechanics and stress calculations will be given, followed by the management of multi-axial stress conditions that arise in all designs of average complexity.

In order to manage multi-axial stress, you will learn Mohr’s circle, as well as Tresca and von Mises yield criteria. These criteria will help you guide designs to avoid yielding in complex stress combinations. The final portion of the webinar will demonstrate how to evaluate buckling in short, medium, and long columns, and how to apply real-world imperfections. Finally, you will learn how to assess the collapse of externally pressurized pipes.
