The objective of this course is to assist professional engineers in understanding the behavior of seismic isolated structures (concrete, masonry, and cultural heritage buildings) and their applications in buildings worldwide.

The course presents a state-of-the-art study of seismic isolation and the most important applications. After a brief introduction on the basic concepts of seismic isolation, applications to new strategic and public buildings are shown, as well as to new residential buildings, pointing out the very good behavior shown by the seismically isolated structures during real seismic events.

Next, attention is focused on the retrofit of existing buildings, which represents the real challenge for the future. The most interesting applications on existing reinforced concrete, masonry and historic structures are shown, pointing out the specific challenges for each case.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Seismic isolation techniques
  • Types of Base Isolation Devices
  • The importance of design codes in the seismic isolation of structures
  • Overview of the application of seismic isolation
  • Retrofit of reinforced concrete buildings
  • Seismic isolation in masonry buildings
  • Retrofit of masonry and cultural heritage buildings
  • Monitoring of seismic isolated buildings
  • The 10 largest base-isolated buildings in the world

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
